ATENEO seized the solo lead with an abbreviated 14-3 victory over University of the Philippines in an abbreviated five-inning game yesterday in the UAAP baseball tournament at the Rizal Memorial Baseball Stadium.
Unlike its first two matches, the Blue Eagles went into full throttle in the first inning, scoring six runs to take full control.
In other games, La Salle and titleholder University of Santo Tomas downed National University (10-4) and Adamson (12-7), respectively, for their second wins in three starts.
In women’s football, Jowe-ann Barruga struck on the 64th minute as the Tigresses nipped the Lady Archers, 1-0, to improve to four points (1-1-0) at the Ocampo field inside the Ateneo campus.
Defending champion Far Eastern University and Ateneo battled to a scoreless draw in the other match.
FEU and Ateneo now have two points with identical 0-2-0 records while La Salle remains at one point with a 0-1-1 slate.
The second-running Green Archers are within striking distance of the Eagles, who are unbeaten in three assignments.
Adriane Bernardo, Kevin Ramos and Matt Laurel had three runs apiece while Charles Catangui contributed two runs and Felipe Claudio Remollo scored four RBIs for the Eagles.
With the match in the bag, Ateneo fielded Kirk Long, a four-time basketball champion who is on his final season playing for the Eagles, late in the third inning.
