Mariners capture volley crown

PHILIPPINE Merchant Marine School defied the intimidating presence of veteran frontliner Alnakran Abdillah to turn back defending champion La Salle-Dasmariñas, 28-26, 25-17, 25-18, yesterday and snatch the 19th National Capital Region Athletic Association (NCRAA) men’s volleyball crown.

Cheered on mostly by their schoolmates, the Mariners took an hour and four minutes to win the game and complete a two-game sweep of their best-of-three finals series at their own home-court – the PMMS gymnasium in Las Piñas.

Earlier, the Rizal Technological University Blue Thunder settled for third place after prevailing over Olivarez College, 28-26, 25-17, 25-18.

With Abdillah’s defense making it difficult for PMMS to score, the Mariners shifted their offense away from the Patriots’ ace spiker, with Michael Uy hitting four crucial points on his serves in the first set.

Uy’s plays also shattered a 20-all deadlock and allowed the Mariners to gain a headway in the first set and the momentum in the second of this spikefest supported by Mikasa and Molten Balls, and ANI AgriNurture Inc.

“Binago ko ang rotation ko. Nilagay ko sa gitna si (Angelo) Macalma, ang setter namin, para mabantayan ang malaki nilang spiker sa harap na si Abdillah. We deserve this win. Nagbunga rin ang sacrifices namin,” said PMMS coach JR Libai.

The Patriots were ahead 9-8 in the second set behind Abdillah’s serves. But the Mariners turned the tables around with Uy and Most Valuable Player Macalma scoring two points each on their services, and veteran Rowell Camisin adding three to give PMMS a 17-12 edge.
