MMTLBL: Hope, St. Jude triumph

HOPE Christian High School held the usually high-scoring Jeron Teng to just 14 points to hack out a 66-60 win over five-peat seeking  Xavier  School while St. Jude  Catholic  School blasted Uno High School, 82-44, in the 42nd Metro Manila Tiong Lian Basketball League at the Uno High School gym.

Hope Christian’s defensive dragnet threw the 6-foot-1 Teng out of his comfort zone to notch its second straight win and take the early lead in the seven-team tournament among the country’s premier Fil-Chinese schools.

Delivering significant numbers for the  Steven Tiu-mentored Hope  Christian were   Don Mendoza,  King  Benemerito and Clint Doliquez-- who all posted in double  figures aside from holding their ground  against Teng and the 6-foot-6  Isaac Go.

Xavier’s defeat was its first in the regular season since dropping its 2008 opener against 14-time champion Chiang Kai Shek College and its  second to Hope Christian since Game 1 of their best-of-three  title series last year.

Hope Christian, bidding to end a 19-year title drought  in the tournament presented by Regan Industrials Sales Inc. and World Balance, was led by Benerito who had 16  markers and  nine rebounds while Mendoza and Doliquez combined for  26 points and the same  number of  rebounds.

St. Jude’s victory in the event also supported by Uratex, Burlington,  Summit Drinking Water, 100 Plus, Supreme Steel Pipe, Superior Pipe,  Ace Water Spa and Molten  was a   fitting welcome for former La Salle star Cholo Villanueva, who is handling the team for the first time.

It was a disappointing defeat for the  Golden Stallions who controlled the second quarter  to take a 27-24 halftime lead.

But Hope Christian opened the third with a 7-4 spurt to take the lead for good.

Teng, who will play for La Salle in the coming UAAP season, finished with a 4-of-19 shooting and was 6-of-11 from the stripes. He pulled down 16 boards but turned the ball nine times in 39 minutes of action.

Richard Sy came off the bench to score 20 points in 19 minutes for St. Jude  while Jason Ligad and Francis Go and Ralph Chua combined for 32 points.
