COACH Roger Gorayeb avoided his worst finish in his colorful career for San Sebastian College in NCAA women’s volleyball.
The Lady Stags bagged the third Final Four berth by tripping Emilio Aguinaldo College, 25-13, 28-26, 25-21, in the penultimate day of eliminations yesterday at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium.
Reigning two-time MVP Joy Benito and Karen Berbano combined forces in the third set for San Sebastian to stave off elimination and keep its bid for a ‘seven-peat’ alive.
The Lady Generals’ Charlette Lorenzo committed a net violation, allowing the Lady Stags to win the second frame.
San Sebastian (6-3) thus joined unbeaten University of Perpetual Help System Dalta (8-0) and EAC (6-3) in the ‘Final Four’.
Letran is now in fourth place at 5-3 card and can claim the remaining semifinals berth with a victory over Arellano University (4-3) tomorrow.
With the victory, Gorayeb remains to track to continue his personal streak for the Lady Stags of having a ‘Top 2’ finish since he started coaching for the Recto-based spikers in the mid-80s.
Earlier, guest team Lyceum played a spoiler in San Beda College’s bid to advance to the semifinals outright, hammering out a 25-21, 25-13, 25-16 win.
The Lady Pirates tied the Lioness, who lost two straight, at 5-4.
In men’s play, San Beda clobbered Lyceum, 25-19, 25-13, 25-18 to finish its elimination round campaign in third place at 7-2 card.
The EAC Brigadiers registered a seven-game sweep in the juniors division by whipping the San Sebastian Staglets, 21-25, 26-24, 25-21, 25-22. (Theodore P. Jurado)
