Reigning Luzon regional champion Mama Sita's extended its dominance in beach football, beating United Football League and NCR titlist Air Force in an exciting finale at Casa Pilar in Boracay last weekend.
Air Force opened the scoring in the fourth minute of the first period on a goal by Winnie Subere but three minutes later, Mama Sita's Harold Lorenzo tied the game with his own goal.
A penalty kick by Mama Sita's Vicente Rosell early in the third period made it 2-1 for Mama Sita's and he followed this with another goal at the start of the third period to extend the lead to 3-1.
Subere scored his second goal at the 6th minute of the same period as Air Force closed in at 3-2, but both teams failed to score in the remaining minutes, allowing Mama Sita's to take the crown in the event that will serve as one of the criteria for choosing the Philippine team to a possible stint in the Beach Football World Cup later this year, according to Beach Football Association of the Philippines president Mike Athab.
The two teams reached the national finals as they both beat the other teams from Mindanao and the Visayas with the two teams battling it out for third place won by the local team, Boracay Dragons, 5-2.
“We are happy that beach football is gaining a lot of popularity now and the Philippine Sports Commission will continue to support this sport in whatever way we can,” said PSC Commissioner Chito Loyzaga.
