Sea Lions secure berth in NCRAA finals

Games Tuesday  (Olivarez College gym)

11:30 a.m. DLSU-Dasmarinas vs PMMS (men)
1:00 p.m. EAC-Cavite vs RTU (women)

THE Olivarez College Sea Lions took charge from start to finish, pummeling the Rizal Technological University Blue Thunder, 94-68, and earning the first finals slot in the 19th National Capital Region Athletic Association (NCRAA) men’s basketball tournament at the Olivarez College gymnasium in Sucat, Paranaque.

Philip de la Cruz and John Corneh sizzled with 20 and 18 points, respectively, for the top-seeded Sea Lions, who denied the Blue Thunder a chance to improve on their runner-up finish to the Colegio de Sta. Monica Cougars last season.

It will be the Sea Lions’ second finals appearance in three years in this cagefest supported by Mikasa and Molten balls, and ANI AgriNurture Inc.

“We are going for our second title. The boys are motivated. Our boss Dr. (Pablo) Olivarez has inspired them to be at their best. They were oozing with confidence when Dr. Olivarez cheered for them during the game,” said Sea Lions coach Michael Saguiguit.

The Sea Lions came to life in the second period, with Mar Orias and John Flores stringing up three triples, which allowed them to widen a 24-20 edge to 10 at halftime, 36-26.

With Corneh and De la Cruz combining for 20 points in the third, the Sea Lions were able to move out of range by 20, 63-43, at the end of the period.

Meanwhile, the second-seeded Philippine Merchant Marine Mariners and the La Salle-Dasmarinas Patriots are still disputing the second finals berth. The Mariners are a game away from arranging a best-of-three finals encounter with the Sea Lions after turning back the Patriots, 84-65, in Game 1 of their best-of-three semifinals series.

If they win over the Patriots and sweep their semis series on Tuesday, the Mariners will be in the finals for the first time ever.
