LETRAN College survived a scare before beating Investwell, 85-80, in the MBL Invitational Cup basketball championship at the Lyceum gym in Intramros, Manila.
The Knights, who played minus ace players Kevin Alas and Raymond Almazan, outworked and outhustled their older opponents for three periods but needed a couple of clutch baskets to salvage the win.
Kevin Racal scattered 21 points, mostly on one-on-one plays down the stretch, to lead the Knights to their second win in four matches in this 10-team tournament sponsored by Smart Sports, Cebuana Lhuillier, Dickies Underwear, PRC Couriers and Parola Maritime.
Jonathan Belorio added 18 points and Marvin Cruz contributed 16 points for the Louie Alas-mentored Knights.
Mark Pangilinan and Reggie Malinao shared scoring honors for Investwell with 14 points apiece.
In the second game, MOB Packers outsteadied Lyceum of the Philippines-Yummy Hotdogs, 78-73, to barge into the win column after four straight losses.
Former University of the East mainstay Angelus Raymundo finished with 20 points and 10 rebounds for MOB of playing coach Richie Melencio.
Roberrt Sanz added 13 points and Noy Javier and June Dizon contributed 10 points apiece for MOB of businessmen Ben Rubio and Mike Ong.
Christopher Cayabyab carried the fight for Lyceum with 17 points, followed by Rich Guevarra and Shane Kho with 11.
The Pirates of coach Bonnie Tan dropped to 0-4, their worst start since joining the MBL.
