Ship rams banca, 1 killed


A CREW member was killed when a passenger/ cargo ship and a  fishing banca collided in Sarangani yesterday morning.

Coast Guard spokesperson Lcdr Algier Ricafrente said in his report  that fishing banca San Jose Bayanihan collided with the passing MV Superferry 20.

There were seven crew members on board the fishing banca, while there were 542 passengers on board the ship.

Initial investigation showed the fishing banca was navigating towards Balot Island from General Santos City, while the passenger/cargo ship departed Makar Wharf enroute to Manila via Zamboanga City at around 11:45 p.m. Thursday. 

The two collided upon reaching the vicinity waters off Seagull, Tinoto, Sarangani, at 1 a.m.  The fishing boat was totally wrecked and eventually sank.

A team from Coast Guard Station General Santos was conducting a maritime patrol and conducted rescue and recovery operations.  The Coast Guard rescued the six crew members of the fishing banca and recovered the body of another crew member.  Efren Montano
