Games tomorrow: (Araneta Coliseum) 2 p.m. – UE vs UP (srs) 4 p.m. – NU vs ADMU (srs) FAR Eastern University unraveled a gem in slotman Carl Bryan Cruz, who dominated inside and powered the Tamaraws to an 84-80 double overtime win over De La Salle Thursday in the UAAP seniors basketball tournament at the Araneta Coliseum. Cruz collected 18 points and swatted three enemy shots in the tightly-fought game the Tamaraws won despite the sub-par plays of Smart Gilas standout Aldrech Ramos and veteran Reil Cervantes. The Morayta-based school rallied from a 10-point second half deficit to remain unbeaten in five games and keep its hold of the solo lead. “Malaki talaga ang naitulong ni Cruz. Maganda ang attitude ng bata. Noong hindi maganda masyado ang ipinakita ng mga big men namin, he stepped up,” said FEU coach Glenn Capacio of the transferee from Metro Manila College, who was played sparingly in two of FEU’s previous games. In the second game, University of Santo Tomas again used its vaunted three-point shooting in the final quarter to edge out National University, 59-58. The Growling Tigers, who shot a combined 32 three-pointers in their last two games, converted just seven treys this time, but the efforts were enough to notch them their third win in five games for a tie with La Salle for third place. “Ang sama ng mga tira namin sa first half, pero mabuti at gumana uli ang three-point shooting, namin” said Growling Tigers mentor Pido Jarencio. After hitting only two three-pointers in the first three quarters, UST suddenly exploded in the fourth, and hit five from downtown, including one from Clark Bautista that gave the Tigers the upperhand, 52-49, with 4:44 remaining. Melo Afuang finished with 15 points and five rebounds while Bautista shot 12 of his 14 markers from three-point land for the Growling Tigers. Jewel Ponferrada had 12 points, eight rebounds, three assists and two blocks while Mervin Baloran added 11 points for the Bulldogs, who fell to 2-3.
