2.5 --  W. So (USA).

GM Wesley So  obtained  a slight  advantage  against world No. 2 GM Veselin Topalov  of  Bulgaria but settled  for  a  draw in  the  eighth  and  penultimate round of the   in  the  third  Sinquefield Cup chess championship at the St. Louis  Chess Clubb Scholastic Center in Missouri.
In a tournament he would rather  forget,  So  failed  to gain  any headway in  a locked-up position that  requires  an “incredible amount of  precision  to  create even  minor  problems”  and agreed  to  split  the point  with the higher-rated Topalov (ELO 2813).
“Despite the fact that So-Topalov played over 50 moves, it didn’t last long in regards to playing time,” wrote Alejandro Ramirez in his report for Chess Base.
“So kept lashing out his moves, and was even above two hours on the clock (more than he started with, due to the extra hour at move 40) at some point. Topalov held comfortably in the endgame.
Overall, So now  has 2.5  points on  one  win, three draws and  four losses.
The  21-year-old  Filipino champion  is three full points behind GM Levon  Aronian of Armenia  with  only  one  round to play.
Aronian split the point with  former world champion GM Viswanathan  Anand of  India to  raise his score to 5.5 points.
Four players --  GMs Alexander Grischuk  of  Russia, Magnus  Carlsen  of   Norway, Maxime Vachier-Lagrave  of France and  Anish Giri  of the Netherlands --  share second to fifth  places with 4.5 points.
So’s  final-round  opponent is GM  Fabiano Caruana of the  United States.
