Australian shot dead


UNISAN, Quezon -- A 38-year-old Australian was shot dead by two unidentified gunmen in Bgy. Muli-nguin, here, Thursday morning.

Prober PO2 Melvin Sisi identified the victim as Daniel Dieterle, a resident of the poblacion.

Dieterle was driving his motorcycle on his way to nearby Pitogo town when shot several times by one of two suspects riding a gray Hyundai van. Although wounded, he was able to run away but was chased by one of the suspects who shot him again several times.

The suspects quickly fled but one of them was arrested by policemen under Chief Insp. Job de Mesa during a pursuit operation.

Dieterle was rushed by residents to the town hospital. He was transferred later to Quezon Medical Center in Lucena City where he died while undergoing treatment.

De Mesa identified the arrested suspect as Peter Abanilla.

A police insider told this writer that Abanilla had admitted he drove the van but insisted that his companion shot the victim.

He said on Wednesday, Dieterle and Abanilla had a heated argument over something. He said the foreigner scolded and berated the latter.

Abanilla was taken to Quezon Provincial Crime Laboratoy Office for paraffin examination while the recovered empty shells  and slugs for .45 pistol will be subjected to cross matching test.
