Time

TIME is a mental illusion. I do not think time actually exists as a physical dimension in space. Our lives are moderated by the spinning of the earth on its axis -- producing the phenomena of day and night, and by the revolution of this ball of rock around the sun -- from which we derive our years. Without this constant regular motion of the earth, we would not sense time.

If the earth stopped rotating, a person would be staring into one small spot of the universe for his lifetime unless he traveled, excluding all other movements of the solar system and galaxy cluster. It seems, time is produced by motion. How do we notice the motion of the earth, on which we are such tiny creatures? We detect changes in the amount of light -- and visually see the movement of the sun and moon across the sky.

From the movement of the sun across the sky, we used basically an upright stick to track the shadow and map how much of the day had passed. The incremental change in the position of the shadow was regular, because the earth seems to spin at a constant angular velocity. People then realize that you actually didn’t have to use the sun directly to map the passage of time.

You could build a machine with a physical ‘shadow of the stick’ that went around in a circle in the same amount of the sun popped out of the horizon and then popped down. Eventually, they called these things clocks and made them really precise, and gave them to many people around the world so that they could all have the same knowledge of time.

Then people invented artificial lighting, and people could live as if the sun were up the whole time. People started getting really busy and were able to accomplish more things in one whole day. We live now more according to the ticking of the watch around our wrist, more than by looking at the sun. We, as conscious creatures, are governed by time through rhythm.

So we have thrown out slow music, and all our music has turned into steady fast beats accompanied with lyrics that tell of all the nice things we can get as a result of living the fast and super-active life. And this is all popular because we have broadcasting media that can spread this kind of rhythm around the world. It is called globalization, where everybody works toward the common goal of economic prosperity.

Everybody gets on the bandwagon and work like a well-synchronized mega robot, each person specializing in different fields, like becoming a limb, an eye, a face, a brain, a kidney -- but never really a full-fledged entire person. Without institutions, governments, television, etc. controlling, among other things, the rhythm of the lives of people, and the presence of beloved people who similarly affect our personal rhythms, I think we would each be living in our own eternities.
