JAKARTA, Indonesia -- GM Eugene Torre settled for a draw with GM Dao Thien Hai of Vietnam in the ninth and final round and finished in a tie for second to fourth places at the end of the 2011 Telin International chess tournament at the Graha Citra Caraka PT Telkom here Wednesday.
Torre, at 59 still the country’s most recognizable player after more than four decades, finished with seven ponts on six wins, two draws and only one loss in the tough, nine-round tournament which attracted 110 players from seven countries.
The fifth-seeded Filipino champion finished half a point behind eventual champion GM Cerdas Barus of Indonesia.
Barus outwitted compatriot IM Sadikin Irwanto to emerge as the solo winner.
Interestingly, Torre defeated Barus in the sixth round but lost to Irwanto the following round.
In the eighth and penultimate round, Torre defeated GM Zhang Zhong of Singapore.
Overall, Torre finished in a tie with top seed GM Merab Gagunashvili of Georgia, GM Dao Thien Hai of Vietnam and IM Dede Liu of indonesia with seven points.
Gagunashvili, the highest-rated player here with an ELO of 2599, outclassed Im Chanda Purnama of Indonesia, while Liu toppled GM Dibyendu Barua of India.
Zhang humbled Sugeng Prayitno of Indonesia, and GM Susanto Megaranto of Indonesia whipped compatriot Andika Pitra to lead four other players in fifth to ninth places with 6.5 points.
