PALEMBANG – Lightweight Charly Suarez and light-welterweight Dennis Galvan do not know much about their respective opponents and are facing foes with the hometown advantage in Monday's 26th Southeast Asian Games boxing finals at the Kampus Indoor Basket Hall.
So they have set their minds on a simple strategy that has served them in good stead so far.
"Gagawin namin ang lahat para sa bayan," chorused the two on the eve of the gold medal matches, which organizers decided to start at 9 p.m. (10 p.m. Manila).
Thailand has five finalists in the nine-event finals and Vietnam has four, but focus of their compatriots back home is on Suarez and Galvan who are the only ones left in the 10-member team.
Suarez is taking on Matius Mandiangan in the 60kg category and Galvan tangles with Afdan Bachtila, also of Indonesia.
Of the two Filipinos, Suarez took the harder path, needing to win two bouts, including an 11-9 squeaker over Thailand's Ardee Saylom Saturday, before making it to the finals.
Galvan had a relatively smoother path and more time on his hands after the luck of the draw pushed him straight to the semis where he demolished Azmi Khirakyazlan of Malaysia, 12-1, last Thursday.
