CHIEF Public Attorney Persida V. Rueda-Acosta is back from Hollywood, USA, after personally receiving her top plum on public service courtesy of Gawad Amerika.

The good Chief is happy, and upbeat and practically on cloud nine as she looks forward to the 4th MCLE Accredited National Convention of Public Attorneys next month slated at the Manila Hotel.

Acosta -- the peacemaker that she is -- reminisces the significant achievements of PAO with only a month before the closing of another banner year of PAO.

Acosta’s great feat was her winning the peace. But the task was dangerous and difficult. No peanuts deal. The fruits, however, are divine and wonderful.

Interior and Local Government (DILG)  Secretary Jesse Robredo was quick to hail and praise Acosta for the peaceful resolution of the unfortunate incident involving the abduction of  four jail personnel  by the Herming  Alfonso Command of the CPP-NPA-NDF in Maloos, Kitaotao, Bukidnon last July 21.

“You manifested dedication to your sworn duty as a public servant in handling the situation with the end in view of peacefully resolving such an unfortunate incident,” Robredo said in his letter to Acosta.

Robredo  cited Acosta’s cooperation and for being instrumental in the peaceful settlement and release of the four captives.

Freedom of the four jail personnel was attained amid the silencing of the guns, the sound of silence and quietness of the historic event sans any media hype amid great danger lurking in the dark.

Acosta’s guardian angel insists the mission of peace was another of her “miracles” in her golden year. A job well done indeed!

Samantala, kailangan ang tulong ni  Secretary Jesse Robredo, na nangangasiwa sa Philippine National Police (PNP) at mga local government executives, ng mga kalapati. Ito ’yong mga kumakarera at mataas ang lipad upang agad makabalik sa kanilang sariling hawla.

Dapat mautusan ni Secretary Jesse ang mga pulis o mga local executives na hulihin at pigilin ang  lambatan ng mga nangangarera na mga kalapati.

Nagreklamo sa ating pitak ang mga organizer ng Quezon City Racing Pigeons Club ukol sa may libu-libong “predators” ng kalapati nila na nalambat ng sindikato. Palipad na umano ang naturang mga kalapati sa kanilang mga hawla sa Maynila at Quezon City mula sa Ilagan, Isabela, subalit ang mga ito ay hindi nakauwi matapos silang malambat.

Pigeons usually use the earth’s magnetic field in detecting their directions. Ayon sa club, ang mga nalalambat na kalapati ay kadalasang ibinebenta sa Bocaue, Bulacan, Malabon, at Arranque market.

Ipinapatubos din umano ang mga kalapating ito sa mga may-ari upang pagkakitaan hanggang P11,000 bawat isang ibon. Jackpot ang sino man na makalambat ng top breed na homing kalapati na libuhin ang  presyo. Kawawa naman ang mga may-ari nito na umaasang makakabalik ang kanilang mga alaga.

Ang iba naman ay ninakaw ang mga kalapati katulad ng nangyaring insidente sa Calbayog kung saan mga armado pang kalalakihan ang nang- hijack ng mga daan-daang kalapati na pangarera. Kabilang sa karerang ito ang iba’t ibang tao na nasa iba’t ibang estado ng buhay.Karamihan pa naman ay mga kabataang nahikayat ng larong ito upang makaiwas sa mga masasamang bisyo.

Ang karera ng kalapati ay isang paraan upang ang mga kabataan ay mailayo sa mga bisyong ’di kanais-nais. Ang mga out-of-school youth ay natututo ng responsibilidad sa pag-aalaga ng kalapati, at sa isang banda ay maaari ring pagkakitaan.
