SUBIC, Zambales -- Anakpawis Rep. Rafael Mariano said he will file a resolution seeking a congressional probe into accidents on all shipyard facilities in the country following the Friday mishap at the Keppel Subic Shipyard here that killed six workers.
Mariano also said that the Labor Department must explain how the Subic shipyard accident happened.
The solon merely relied on media reports that five or six workers who were installing a securing post and scaffolding underneath a 42-ton elevated steel ramp were killed while four others were seriously injured.
The ramp was supposed to be lain flat on the posts before it should be installed at the stern side of the ship while at dry dock. However, the posts and scaffoldings collapsed with the ramp and pinned the workers to tragic deaths and injuries.
“Keppel’s management must also make an account of the work-related accident,” said the solon.
Local labor laws mandate DOLE’s responsibility for the administration and enforcement of occupational health and safety laws, regulations and standards in all establishments and workplaces, especially in hazardous workplaces such as shipyards and construction.
“We do not want this latest work-related tragedy follow suit the still unresolved Hanjin Subic accidents and Eton tragedy where no party was held accountable for the workers’ deaths,” Mariano said.
