THE fight of incumbent Vice Mayor Romulo “Kid” Pena for the vice-mayoralty race in Makati City is getting tighter, what with the full backing given by the Binay camp to its bet, City Administrator Marjorie “Marge” De Veyra.
Pena is formerly from the political fence of Vice President Jejomar Binay, but a twist in the 2010 elections put him out of the powerful bloc in Makati City, and he found himself in the arms of former vice mayor Ernesto Mercado, who ran and lost to incumbent Mayor Jejomar Erwin Binay Jr.
The Kid, as he was fondly called, survived the onslaught, beating rival Rico J. Puno in the tight political contest in 2010. Majority of the councilors who ran under their banner also won, but in the end they decided to switch allegiance because of political survival.
With Jun Binay at the helm, the city continues to progress, giving the present administration the ability to eprovide more or improve basic services for local constituents, including senior citizens.
This maybe the reason why nobody, not even Mercado, dared to challenge Jun Binay in the mayoralty contest. Thus, Pena and De Veyra are the ones who would lock horns since even the councilors have no clear opposition except themselves. They would be fighting who would emerge on top after the smoke of the political contest in 2013 clears.
De Veyra, as far as I can remember, rose from the ranks -- from a mere assistant of then former councilor Nini Licaros at the Makati Social Welfare Department to city administrator and head of MSWD at the same time.
The Binays have her full trust and confidence. Thus, their political workers on the ground or in the barangay level are readily at her disposal. She is very visible in the different barangays with her feeding programs and realted projects.
Meanwhile, Pena has to rely on his trusted lieutenants, mainly former members of the Makati Youth Development Fundation founded during the time of the late former mayor Nemesio Yabut.
These political operators are pinpointing locations Pena should visit using their meager resources. However, some of these so-called leaders have decided to dump some of the people who helped the vice mayor in the 2010 elections and took in new ones who have no command in their respective territories.
Well, Pena’s operators might be making the same mistake they made during the run of former vice mayor Nemesio Arturo “Toro” Yabut in the 1998 local elections where he was beaten by Dra. Elenita Binay.
Well, whether Pena or De Veyra emerges as the winner, they are both capable to discharge their chosen position. Goodluck sa inyong dalawa. May the best person win.
A wayward bullet from an unknown irresponsible person killed a seven-year-old girl who was only watching the revelry during the celebration of New Year’s eve.
A stray bullet ended the life of Stephanie Nicole Ella’s life, illiciting public outrage against the practice of indiscriminate firing, lalo na during a revelry like New Year’s eve .
Although all the government agencies have done their part to dissuade people from using guns to welcome the New Year, some apparently were not able to control the urge to fire their weapons. Thus, over 20 people were hit by stray bullets, with one hitting Stephanie Nicole Ella’s head.
She died Wednesday afternoon after suffering her eighth heart attack at the East Avenue Medical Center in Quezon City, her doctors said. Her parents condemned the senseless act that took away their lovely child.
Stephanie is now unto her Creator’s arms. Bless her soul, but the police should do its very best to track down the perpetrator so her loss would not be another one added to the list of unsolved crimes.
According to the initial report, Caloocan City policemen have been receiving information from residents that could lead them to track down the shooter.
This is quite welcome. According Supt. Jack Candelarioto, Caloocan City police spokesman, some have residents turned over slugs to his office for analysis.
The slugs would be analyzed by the PNP Crime Laboratory, and it is up to them to determine if they match the one extracted from the head of the victim.
Well, it is already a police work, but Stephanie Nicole’s the loss would definitely be a sorry loss to the parents and relatives of the victim. Imagine, an innocent girl just enjoying the revelry ending up dead due to the hard-headedness of the suspect. My God, I could not imagine if this happens to any of us. It would be definitely revolting, but with God’s grace we pray that it will not happen again to any of us.
Residents of Rizal are already sold to the idea that long-time Rizal Gov. Ito Ynares would be their next governor again after his son, Gov. Casimiro “Jun” Ynares, decided to seek the mayorship of Antipolo City.
The young governor would fight incumbent Antipolo City Mayor Danilo Leyble, formerly an ally during the 2010 elections.
