PH, Laos boost ties


BILATERAL ties between the Philippines and Laos strengthened further after Foreign Affairs Secretary Albert F. del Rosario met with Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Dr. Thongloun Sisoulith recently.

Del Rosario was in Laos from  April 6-7 upon the invitation of the Deputy Minister. He conveyed the country’s interest for stronger relations between the two countries.

The two officials discussed the holding of a Joint Bilateral Commission between the two nations and the establishment of the Philippines-Laos Business Council.

Sisoulith also hosted a luncheon for Del Rosario and his delegation at the Lao Plaza Hotel.

The DFA secretary paid a courtesy call on Prime Minister Thongsing Thommavong.  They agreed to further enhance joint efforts that will promote closer relations between the Philippines and Laos.

Del Rosario was accompanied by Philippine Ambassador to Laos Marilyn J. Alarillan and DFA Assistant Secretary for Asia-Pacific Affairs Cristina G. Ortega.  Other members of the delegation were Consul Christopher T. Aro and DFA-ASPAC Principal Assistant Theresa Milallos. 

Del Rosario also met with key officials of the Lao National Chamber of Commerce and Industry and discussed with them ways to facilitate trade and investment.

He thanked the LNCCI officials for supporting the Philippine Business Mission to Vientiane in July 2010 which resulted in the opening of Philippine enterprises in Laos.

The establishment of the Philippines-Laos Business Council and the organization of the Second Philippine Business Mission to Vientiane in 2011 were also discussed.

Del Rosario also visited the Lao National Army Museum and met the members of the Filipino community in Laos.
