Paano ang kuwentahan? PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 08 February 2010 20:26
PaulBEFORE proceeding, my sincerest condolences to the family of colleague Emil Gamos, whose mother, Esperanza, 75, passed away last Saturday.

The e-mail I got from another good friend, RPN 9 reporter Orlan Mauricio, said the  body of Emil’s mother presently lies at the family residence at Del Carmen Village, Bgy. Sumapang Matanda, Malolos City.

Kay Emil at sa kanyang pamilya, muli ang sinserong pakikidalamhati mula sa Journal Group sa panahong ito.

The January 22-26 “one-on-one” Pulse Asia survey showing Sen. Manny Villar already one point ahead of erstwhile front runner, Sen. Noynoy Aquino, should not fool the public into believing that the presidential contest has been narrowed down to just the two of them.

The result where Villar got 46 percent from Aquino’s 45 percent is of course a statistical tie insofar as the correct reading of the poll result is concerned.

On the other hand, this should not be takemerely with a grain of salt,  but with tons of it -- considering that Villar obviously  paid for the survey.

Such data is of course added grease to his well-oiled propaganda department, which is now on overdrive in an effort to project the image that his credibility did not suffer in the light of the Senate report on the C-5 road project,  where he was found “guilty” by his peers of abusing his office as a lawmaker for his own gain.

I was among those who watched and listened as Villar finally stood up last week to “defend” his side on the issue.

But like the rest of the grizzled news reporters and lawmakers at the Senate plenary that Tuesday afternoon, we all realized that Villar did not stood up to clarify the issue before his peers but to instead campaign before the electorate through the live media coverage of the event.

In short, the commissioned survey aimed to send the message that Villar’s credibility did not suffer from the C-5 road extension scandal in the same way that  the SCTex road project, his lack of notable accomplishments as congressman and senator,  and the ghosts of two peasant massacres under her mother’s term,  have dented Aquino’s image.

Yet, while the result is good propaganda ammunition, it suffers from another serious defect -- it is not grounded on the reality of the May 10 elections.

The reality of the May 10 elections is that there are ten approved presidential candidate: Aquino, Villar, Erap, Sen. Jamby, Sen. Gordon, Gibo Teodoro, Bro. Eddie Villanueva, Nick Perlas, Vetallano Acosta and JC delos Reyes.

Against this backdrop, the survey result being touted by Villar’s camp loses all meaning.

And for the camps of Villar and Aquino to forcibly narrow down the field of choice by the people in the elections between them through commissioned surveys is not only unfair but also indicates the developing arrogance taking hold of their respective campaign strategists.

‘Yun bang, parang sila na lang ang dapat pagpilian ng mga tao.

Dahil ba sila lang ang may pinakamalaking balon ng kuwarta sa mga kandidato at kayang magbayad ng mga surveys na ang mga tanong at inaasahang resulta ay pabor sa kanila?

And speaking of campaign expenses, a growing number of people are beginning to wonder how Villar intends to recoup the billions of pesos (some say more than P3 billion as of last count) he has so far splurged to increase the chances of his being elected this May 10.

I am one of those predisposed to believe him, dear readers had he answered the direct queries of his peers last week.

Meanwhile, my advice for the 2ND ID of the AFP under “Brother” Major Gen. Jorge Segovia, is to handle carefully the growing brouhaha over the weekend arrest of 43 alleged “communists” in Morong, Rizal.

His deputy, Col. Leo Baladad of the 202ND Brigade,   insists they have  the evidence to back up their case but still, the issue is not merely about legality.

It has slipped over into the realm of politics and propaganda and if not handled well, they may find themselves in the crosshairs of public condemnation.

‘Yun lang.
