Maturity, wisdom, and good behavior needed

It is too early to tell how the ongoing impeachment proceedings in the Senate will end.

Off hand, I would like, however, to commend Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile’s opening remarks which set the tone on how the senator-judges must handle the proceedings.

While I have no intention of meddling in the Senate trial for, as Senate President Enrile said, only the Senate is empowered by the Constitution to judge and decide, that the people do not have the authority to decide,  I can only agree with him, for whichever way the final verdict goes, we the people have no right to question, for we belong to a “representative democracy,” meaning to say that the people have already vested the powers to those we have elected in the elections to represent us; that at the end of the day, hindi tayo puwedeng manggulo at magsisigaw sa kalsada.

I don’t think there is anything wrong in commenting based on our observations on what we closely see on television, hear on radio, and read in the newspapers even way before the Senate trial began.

The commentaries were very confusing rather than enlightening.  We must accept na mas nakagulo sa ating isipan.

What puzzles me is how a group of people could connive to present in court such spurious documents and certified at that by no less than the PCSO corporate secretary, Atty. Eduardo Araullo, as “certified true copies” when they are definitely not.  And they did more than that just to make Juico and company appear “good” in the eyes of President Aquino.

For almost two years in office, from day one, they plotted to put us of the past PCSO board in bad light.  This is the striking similarity that disturbs us no end. It’s a shame campaign they conducted against us.

Instead of performing their duties in helping the poor sick people by hitting the ground running when Juico and company took over the PCSO in July of 2010, they instead failed to attend to the needs of sick poor patients whose lives were lost in the process by busying themselves in transfering to different offices that took more than five months to settle down.

Chairman Juico and her board wasted so much time transfering the PCSO offices from the Quezon Institute complex, a perfectly sound and beautiful historical site, to the luxurious and more expensive office in the Philippine International Convention Center and elsewhere, dispersing the PCSO offices as they are now to many locations in Metro Manila, causing great difficulty on the poor patients to avail themselves of medical assistance.

We will soon see if the eager-beaver congressmen-members of the prosecution team were also hasty and irresponsible in what they embarked on.

I have one observation to add: Comparing them with the members of the defense team, it further proved to me that maturity, wisdom, and good behavior are indeed the better qualities to possess, which the irresponsible and adventurous young ones do not yet possess. Their tendency to grandstand is so obvious and which they must curtail if we want the truth to come out.  Unless they discipline themselves, the Senate trial can turn into another circus.

What I cannot stand are those who point an accusing finger when they   themselves are not clean to start with.

I must commend the brilliant mind of former SC Justice Serafin Cuevas, who at 83 years of age (he said it himself in one of his TV interviews) earned my admiration.

On the other hand, with due respect to Congressmen-prosecutor Niel Tupas, his line about Judas Iscariot selling himself for “some pieces of gold” did not ring a bell.  I have always thought that Judas Iscariot bartered his principles for “30 pieces of silver,” not gold.

Ginto na ba ngayon ang bayaran?

How times have changed.

Read more
