LAS VEGAS – One is enough, but two is too much.
Again frustrated by the outcome of his fight with Filipino nemesis Manny Pacquiao, Juan Manuel Marquez is contemplating of finally calling it quits after 13 years and waging 59 brutal bouts inside the ring.
For the second time in three years, the 38-year-old Mexican was at the receiving end of a controversy-filled majority decision win eked out by Pacquiao.
The victory came in the heels of a similar highly-debatable, split decision the Filipino boxing champion gained over Marquez in a 2008 title fight for the World Boxing Council (WBC) super-featherweight championship.
“Honestly, it’s the result of the fight that makes me think about retirement,” said an obviously frustrated Marquez at the post-fight press conference.
“I’ll sit down with my family, with my camp, and make a decision whether to continue with the sport or simply retire.”
Top Rank promoter Bob Arum doesn’t’ believe Marquez otherwise.
“He’s not serious about retirement,” said the 79-year-old Arum. He’s guaranteed to get $5million, and probably ends up making $9 to $10 million, and that’s a lot of money, a lot of money.
“I’ll sit down with him and try to come to a negotiation.”
Marquez hardly lost the same speed and strength he had in his previous fights with Pacquiao despite the added weight he carried to move up in weight, constantly beating the world’s top pound-for-pound king to the draw with his effective counter-punching.
That’s the reason why he’s very much puzzled the same way his throng of Mexican fans were over why two of the judges scored the bout in favor for Pacquiao, and one had it a draw.
“What do I have to do for the judges to give me the fight,” he asked. “Everybody knows what happened. I know I won the fight.”
The native of Mexico City acknowledged that Pacquiao is a great boxer and a strong fighter who can take a real punch.
But as relentless a puncher the reigning welterweight champion is, Marquez said, “honestly, I don’t felt his punches and was never hurt.”
“For this fight I felt so good in this weight,” he admitted. “I felt he’s stronger than in the first two fights, but I never really felt his strength.”
Unable to convince the three judges, Marquez said he’s leaving it all to boxing fans to decide who the was the one deserving of the win.
“For me the best judges are the audience. I believe I connected solid punches, very solid, solid punches and they respond to sensationally,” he said.

Read more
