Llamados down Aces in 2 OTs

Games on Wednesday: (Araneta Coliseum)

5:15 p.m. – Talk ‘N Text vs. Shopinas.com
7:30 p.m. – Powerade vs. Meralco

JAMES Yap punctuated a 24-point out with back-to-back pressure shots, and rookie Mark Barroca had a career-high 22 points as B-Meg outlasted Alaska in double overtime last night, 92-89, in the PBA Philippine Cup at the Araneta Coliseum.

The two-time MVP struggled early on but more than made up for it by scoring eight of the Llamados’ 12 points in the second overtime including the final two field goals on fall-away jumpers as the star-laden franchise picked up its third win in a row for a 5-4 (win-loss) record in a tie with Meralco.

Regulation ended at 73-73, and the first overtime ending at 80-80 after Barroca misfired on a turn-around fade-away jumper with 0.2 seconds left to play.

With the win, B-Meg recorded a sweep of its head-to-head duel with Alaska in the eliminations. The Llamados won over the Aces last Oct. 12 (81-75) with, ironically, Yap leading B-Meg to victory with 20 points.

The Aces now are in deep trouble making it to the playoffs with their seventh defeat in eight games. The 13-time champion franchise is lodged at ninth spot, just a shade above winless Shopinas.com (0-9, win-loss).

Kerby Raymundo added 14 points and Mark Pingris had 10 for B-Meg.

LA Tenorio scored 28 points for Alaska, but was hardly a factor in the two overtime periods after suffering cramps. Cyrus Baguio contributed 17 points and Jay-R Reyes had 14 points.

Alaska actually had a chance to win it in regulation, and had 17.5 seconds to pull it off in its final offensive play.

But Reyes, receiving a perfect feed from Tenorio, bungled a reverse lay-up.

B-Meg, on the other hand, missed its chance to win it outright in the first extra period, but never let the opportunity slip away in the second overtime.

The Llamados were merely ahead by 88-86 when Yap drained a jumper to make it 90-86 with 1:09 to go, and after Thoss split his charities, he again knocked in a jumper as B-Meg claimed a 92-87 lead with 43.4 seconds remaining.

The scores:

B-Meg (92) - Yap J. 24, Barroca 22, Raymundo 14, Pingris 10, De Vance 9, Maierhofer 5, Urbiztondo 2, Ferriols 2, Reavis 2, Yap R. 2.

Alaska (89) - Tenorio 28, Baguio 17, Reyes 14, Thoss 13, Baracael 7, Custodio 4, Dela Cruz 4, Eman 2, Salamat 0, Sotto 0.

Quarterscores: 22-25, 34-35, 56-53, 73-73, 80-80, 92-89

PH economic outlook

The Philippine economy, as measured by the gross national product, eked out a mere  3.7-growth  in 2011 despite government efforts to boost spending in the fourth  quarter. The government’s last-quarter effort to boost total economic output was restrained by the slowdown in exports and the lingering debt problem in Europe.... Read more

Worth his SALN?

An impeachable offense is whatever a majority of the House considers it to be at any given moment in history; conviction results from whatever offense  two-thirds of the other body (the Senate) considers to be sufficiently serious to require removal of the accused from office. – Former US President Gerald...
