IF the government does not act decisively thousands of overseas Filipino workers in the Middle East will end up jobless in the coming months.
Workers in the region particularly domestic helpers may lose their jobs because of the Aquino administration’s inaction on the problem even with Saudi Arabia having told the Philippine government to stop sending workers since March, according to Victor Fernandez, president of Philippine Association of Service Exporters Inc.
The Saudization policy was put in place a long time ago but the Philippine government was insisting that there would be no crisis because Filipino workers are in demand in Saudi Arabia.
The PASEI president said that was true 40 years ago, but now the competition is stiff because India, Sudan, Nepal and other countries are also exporting workers who get smaller pay.
