THE Department of Foreign Affairs yesterday said about 300 Filipinos have been rescued from the Italian cruise ship that ran aground near Italy’s Giglio Island off the coast of Tuscany on Friday evening.
Of those rescued 21 suffered injuries. No names were available yet at presstime.
“At least 21 Filipino seafarers were reported to be injured, one with a broken arm, another with hypothermia,” the DFA said in a statement.
“A rescued Filipino crewmember said the Filipinos are generally safe. An official roll call of crew members is still being undertaken,” the DFA added.
Philippine Ambassador to Rome Virgilio Reyes dispatched a seven-member emergency response team to assist the Filipino survivors.
The 300 Filipinos are part of the cruise liner’s P1,000 crew, the DFA said.
