MORE Filipinos who were caught up in Syria’s political crisis are expected to arrive after the government asked them to leave the country for their own safety.
According to Overseas Workers Workers Administration chief Carmelita Dimzon, the first batch of repatriates composed of 56 Filipinos returned home yesterday.
They arrived at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport about 3:30 p.m. on board a Qatar Airways flight from Oman.
“They heeded the government’s call for mandatory repatriation. They refused to go home at first, but when they realized that the situation continues to escalate and worsen, they decided to respond positively to the call,” Dimzon said.
She also said that the government repatriation team composed of officials from the foreign affairs and labor departments arranged for the workers to be released from their employment contracts so they could go home.
OWWA expects more Filipinos to be repatriated over the next few days.
Yesterday’s arrivals were met at the premier airport by an OWWA team that will help them with immigration and customs formalities.
“Aside from this, they will also be offered temporary shelter at the OWWA Halfway Home, where a counseling team will be available for stress debriefing, and also helped with their domestic transportation needs,” Dimzon said.
