FIFTY-FIVE overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) are scheduled to be repatriated from Syria in separate batches this week, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) announced yesterday.
DFA spokesman Raul Hernandez said “following the raising of alert level 3 in Syria on Aug. 16 due to the security situation there, the Philippine Embassy in Damascus will be repatriating 55 OFWs in four separate batches at government expense.”
He said 10 OFWs arrived yesterday via EK 332 and seven others are expected in Manila today.
For Dec. 1, 24 OFWs are scheduled to arrive the Ninoy Aquino International Airport via QR644 while 14 others are expected on Dec. 3 via QR 644, Hernandez said.
It will be recalled that a 10-member Rapid Reaction Team was sent to Syria in Sept. as augmentation personnel to the Embassy in its efforts to repatriate Filipinos in the country.
At the DFA, they also organized the Task Group on Voluntary Repatriation-Syria.
The embassy is coordinating with the International Office of Migration (IOM)-Damascus and with the airlines for its ongoing efforts to repatriate more OFWs from Syria, Hernandez added.
