ASTER more than 10 months in captivity, MV Blida with two Filipino seamen, was released by the Somali pirates, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) announced yesterday.
Foreign Affairs spokesman Raul Hernandez said the ship and its crew were released on Nov. 3 as reported by the ship’s local manning agency.
The vessel then sailed towards Mombasa, Kenya where the crew members would undergo medical check up.
The exact date of the Filipino crew member’s repatriation has yet to be scheduled.
Foreign Affairs Secretary Albert del Rosario instructed the Philippine Embassy in Nairobi to extend all possible assistance to the Filipino seafarers once they arrive in Mombasa.
The Algerian-flagged and Greek-owned vessel was hijacked by Somali pirates on January 1, 2011, approximately 150 nautical miles off the port of Salalah, Oman. Cristina Lee-Pisco
