PHILIPPINE National police chief Director General Ronald ‘Bato’ M. de la Rosa yesterday called on fresh troops from the elite PNP Special Action Force tasked to guard the National Bilibid Prisons to resist all kinds of temptation that they would naturally face after replacing their colleagues who had served for more than four-months in the national penitentiary.

“Do not ever allow yourselves to be bribed whatever the circumstances may be. Do not allow yourselves to be involved in illegal activities. Do not ever do anything to destroy the image of PNP,” the top cop told officers and men of the new SAF Provisional Battalion who will now secure the overcrowded prison, which is home to some of the country’s most hardened criminals and drug lords.

According to de la Rosa, the NBP is no ordinary prison facility and it would be most important for the SAF troopers to shy away from the evils of money being offered by moneyed and influential prisoners to get away with their illegal activities right inside the sprawling prison compound.

“You will certainly be faced with the strongest temptations to corrupt you and make you give in to the demands of the prisoners, among them drug lords, murderers, and the most hardened criminals,” he told the elite troopers.

However, he warned that he will apply the full force of the law on those who will be found to have succumbed to corruption while performing their duties. “Kung mayroon kahit isa man lang sa inyo na lumihis ng landas, ako na mismo ang makakaharap ninyo,” the 4-star general said while reminding the commandos that President Duterte and the entire nation have full trust in them.

De la Rosa acknowledged that  there is still much to do to rid the national penitentiary of illegal drugs and corruption. “Marami pang dapat gawin dito sa NBP upang tuluyan nang malinis itong illegal drugs at corruption. Marami pa tayong gagawin sa buong bansa upang maresolba na ang problema sa droga,” he said.

“Let me assure (you) the national leadership and the Filipino people that your national police force will continue to render its best in serving and protecting the nation,” he stressed.
