A 16-year-old out-of-school youth was shot and seriously wounded by a lone gunman wearing bonnet and face mask yesterday in Malabon City.

Malabon police chief Senior Supt. John Chua said Joel Espino, of Flovie Homes-6, Letre, Bgy. Tonsuya, was rushed by concerned citizens to Tondo Medical Center where he was placed under observation.
PO2 Ma. Theresa Dagman, of the Malabon Police Women and Children’s Protection Desk (WCPD), said the victim was groping for some coins in a shallow canal in Phase 2, Paradise Village, Letre, at around 3 a.m. when the suspect, armed with an improvised handgun or sumpak shot him once in the body.
After the incident, the suspect fled on foot, leaving the bloodied victim slumped near the canal.
Police investigators are looking into a possibility that the conflict between rival gangs in the area was the motive behind the incident.
