INVESTIGATORS from the Major Crimes Investigation Unit of the Philippine National Police Criminal Investigation and Detection Group yesterday pressed their investigation into what really triggered the riot inside the New Bilibid Prison on Wednesday morning that left a convicted kidnapper-turned suspected drug lord dead and four others wounded.
On orders of PNP chief, Director General Ronald ‘Bato’ M. de la Rosa, PNP-CIDG director, Chief Superintendent Roel B. Obusan on Wednesday sent a team of CIDG-MCIU probers to coordinate their investigation into the incident with the Bureau of Corrections headed by retired PNP General Rolando Asuncion.
For a start, the CIDG-MCIU investigators are reviewing the closed-circuit television (CCTV) recordings in the area and are looking into the statements of witnesses including prison authorities and inmates.
There have been different versions by supposed witnesses to the riot which rocked the NBP Building 14 resulting in the death of high-profile inmate Tony Co, the suspected drug lord who is serving time for the September 27, 2001 kidnapping of a woman who later married former PNP chief, General Arturo C.
Co, whose real name is Xu You Kwang, was reportedly stabbed several times at the height of a riot inside Building 14 which also led in injuries to convicted drug lord Peter Co and Jaybee Sebastian, a convicted kidnapper who has been tagged by some of his fellow prisoners as the feared Bilibid inmate who helped raise funds for Senator Leila de Lima’s senatorial bid.
All three were taken to the Muntinlupa Medical Center while a fourth, Vicente Sy, was brought to the NBP Hospital following the 7:30 a.m. riot which reportedly started when the group of Tony Co was confronted by jailed former police officer Clarence Dongail for having a ‘shabu session’ inside their cell which the latter feared would all bring them trouble with authorities.
Irked, Tony Co reportedly went to the cell of Dongail and Sebastian and attacked Dongail with a knife. Seeing the incident, cellmates of the former cop came to his rescue triggering the full-scale riot.
