PRESIDENT Benigno Aquino III quashed any doubts about his mental state, pointing out the accusations leveled against him by Chief Justice Renato Corona are baseless.
The President said the dare of Corona for him to disclose to the public his alleged psychological records is nothing but a rehash of his detractors’ claims during the May, 2010 polls.
Aquino reacted to the magistrate’s feisty statement on the sidelines of the 33rd founding anniversary of Aurora province.
The special event was also attended by Rep. Sonny Angara, a member of the House prosecution panel, and his father, Sen. Edgardo Angara, who is sitting as a judge in the impeachment court against Corona.
Aquino also turned the tables on Corona for challenging him to release his own Statement of Assets, Liabilities and Net Worth, pointing out he does not keep his SALNs in locked vaults like what the magistrates do.
The President also said he cannot be stopped from discussing the impeachment proceedings against Corona. He said a "discourse" on the trial is part of a healthy democracy, adding that the people have the right to know and make an informed decision on the case.
"Democracy is the majority deciding for everybody," he said.
The President said that the criticisms he had been voicing out should not be viewed as a personal attack against Corona, but against what he described as the rotten system that the magistrate represents.
Several senator-judges including Senators Vicente "Tito" Sotto III and Joker Arroyo have already cautioned both the President and Corona from engaging in a heated word war on the impeachment case in public.
Sotto said that the exchanges between the President and the Chief Justice were “not only improper but also unbecoming of their stature."
Aquino on Thursday publicly discussed the discrepancies in Corona's SALNs and the gaps once the SALNs are compared with the magistrate's bank accounts.
Corona retorted by challenging the President to disclose his own SALNs, as well as his alleged psychological records, to the public.
Deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte earlier claimed Aquino is exempted from the admonition of the Senate that merits of the impeachment case should not be discussed outside of the proceedings as he is technically not a party to the trial.
She clarified that the President was not conditioning the minds of the people for another People Power in the event that Corona is acquitted.
The President was in Aurora province yesterday for the inauguration, too, of the new P509 million worth hospital funded by the Japanese government.
