Opposition cold on Aquino impeachment

A HIGH-RANKING leader of the House opposition bloc yesterday underscored the importance for them to look for more serious issues against President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III.

He said the taxpayer’s letter-request to have him impeached based on alleged “massive tax fraud” over the sale of a government property in Baguio City to SM Investment Corporation during the time of the Ramos administration may not fly.

House Deputy Minority Leader and Zambales Rep. Ma. Milagros “Mitos” Magsaysay said the letter of Danilo Lihaylihay, president of the Philippine Association of Revenue Informers, Inc., needs more serious issue to convince majority of lawmakers into supporting the initiative.

“Pag-aaralan namin kung puwede pang magdagdag ng ibang issue. Kung ako, ibang grounds ang gagamitin ko. Kasi kung ’yan lang, baka it will not stand. Ayaw naman namin na tulad dito sa Corona impeachment na magmukha kaming incompetent,” Magsaysay told Rowena Salvacion’s Buena Manong Balita over dzBB.

Magsaysay was referring to the alleged half-baked impeachment complaint against impeached Supreme Court (SC) Chief Justice Renato Corona.

However, Magsaysay did not elaborate on the potential impeachable issues that could be raised against President Aquino.

She said the opposition bloc may take a stand today (Monday) whether to push the impeachment of the Chief Executive based on Lihaylihay’s letter-request.

“Napag-usapan namin ’yan last week. Mag-uusap ulit kami this Monday. Pinag-aaralan naming mabuti dahil ayaw naming magsalang ng mahinang reklamo,” said Magsaysay.

The lawmaker explained that their group would not file a baseless impeachment complaint against President Aquino.

“We don’t want to waste an opportunity to file a good impeachment complaint kasi one impeachment lang per year. Maghihintay ka pa ng isang taon ulit bago ka makapag-file ng panibago if you want to have someone impeached,” said Magsaysay.

Last week, House Minority Leader and Quezon Rep. Danilo Suarez vowed to present his report to the members of minority this Monday about the veracity of  Lihaylihay’s letter.

Lihaylihay expressed his intention to have President Aquino impeached in a letter dated Feb. 8, 2012, to Suarez based on alleged massive tax fraud over the sale of property in Baguio City.
