Prosecution told: Be careful with evidence

NAVOTAS Rep. Toby Tiangco has urged the House prosecution panel to be careful with presenting evidence as well as disclosing sources of documents in the impeachment trial.

In a statement, Tiangco said that the contradicting sources of bank documents slow down the impeachment proceedings.

Members of the prosecution team, Mindoro Oriental Rep. Reynaldo Umali and Quezon City Rep. Jorge Banal, are holding the same documents containing bank accounts of Chief Justice Renato Corona.

But the two have disclosed different sources, which Tiangco said is causing confusion to the public.

“One controversy that has been slowing down the impeachment proceedings is the different sources of bank documents, the more infamous of which was from a certain small lady. Wasn’t the small lady GMA? Another source revealed that it was found at a lawmaker’s gate,” Tiangco said.

He urged the prosecution panel to be extra careful as the lapses in the documents may weaken the case against Corona.

“One would think that a lawmaker would be aware of the Bank Secrecy Law. Not only that, but a person’s first instinct, when handed very sensitive documents by a stranger or when left at one’s gate would be to doubt the authenticity of those documents, and thereafter, to check on the source as well as the veracity of the same,” he said.

“Isn’t it irrational and against human nature to immediately assume that they were legally obtained or that they were from a reliable source?” Tiangco also said.

Further, Tiangco observed that “it has been raining heavily here in Manila these past few days, it won’t be surprising if come Monday, a wet document from heaven is to be presented before the impeachment court.”

Tiangco is among the lawmakers who did not sign the impeachment complaint, saying that the filing was done hastily and the members were not given the opportunity to scrutinize it.

Because of this, Tiangco decided to leave the administration coalition and opted to be an independent lawmaker.
