‘Happy b’day Mr. (Senate) President, let’s go home early’

IT being Valentine’s Day and the birthday of Presiding Justice and Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile, the defense and prosecution panels jointly asked for the early adjournment of yesterday’s proceeding in the Corona impeachment trial.

Lead defense counsel Serafin Cuevas made the request for the early adjournment of the hearing.

“Today is February 14, the natal day of the Presiding Officer of this honorable court, your honor. In addition to that it is Valentine’s Day, baka ho pwedeng ipahinga niyo na ho sa itong araw na ito para naman makapiling namin ang aming mga minamahal sa buhay,” Cuevas said.

The appeal of Cuevas elicited laughter among all present including the prosecutors and senator-judges.

Lead prosecutor Rep. Niel Tupas Jr. supported the request of Cuevas.

“We join the manifestation of the defense, happy Valentine’s Day and happy birthday, Mr. President,” Tupas said to Enrile.

The senator-judges agreed on the early adjournment saying that the work that Enrile had done deserve early suspension or adjournment of the trial.

The trial was adjourned at 4:25 p.m.

Meanwhile, in yesterday’s hearing, the Senate impeachment court has granted the motion to quash filed by the defense team.

The court canceled the issuance of subpoenas to Philippine Airlines officials that include, Enrique Javier, vice president for sales, and Ria Carrion Domingo, vice president for product loyalty and marketing.

The subpoena were in connection with the alleged PAL platinum card given to Corona and his wife Cristina.

The defense said that the issue of PAL platinum card was not mentioned in Article III of the impeachment complaint.
