MORE Filipinas are turning to illegal drug activities specifically drug trafficking apparently thinking authorities would go easy on them, the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency said yesterday.
PDEA chair Undersecretary Jose S. Gutierrez Jr. said their records since 2010 showed a rising trend in the involvement of women in illegal drug activities, drug pushing in particular.
Gutierrez said that data consolidated by the Agency showed that from 872 females arrested for violating Republic Act 9165 or the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002 in 2010, the figure rose to 927 in 2011 or a 6 percent increase.
“Taking a closer look at the data reveals that 76 percent of the females arrested by PDEA in 2011 are classified as pushers. This is 4 percent higher than the 72 percent recorded in 2010,” Gutierrez said.
The recent arrest of three female drug pushers in separate buy-bust operations last Monday alone supported their observation, the PDEA chief said.
He said the first suspect, 27-yar-old Razil Abergas, who happened to be pregnant, was arrested by PDEA Regional Office 10 agents in Valencia City, Bukidnon, after she sold a sachet of shabu to an undercover officer. Alfred Dalizon
