PRESIDENT Benigno Aquino III gave P3.3 million to Guihulngan as he spent his 52nd birthday visiting the earthquake-hit province of Negros Oriental.
Aquino was accompanied by his sisters Pinky Abellada and Ballsy Cruz, and several Cabinet officials including Transportation Secretary Mar Roxas to Guihulngan City, one of the most devastated areas in Negros Oriental.
Aquino’s chopper landed in Dumaguete City from where he and his party traveled to the isolated city of Guihulngan, where 29 people were buried in a landslide.
Guihulngan City Mayor Ernesto Reyes briefed the President on the city’s situation after the latter gave him the financial assistance.
Aquino asked Reyes to appeal to his constituents to open their market stalls to prevent food shortage.
He also advised them against panicking owing to a tsunami scare as the local folks serenaded him with a birthday song. He reassured the Guihulngan folks of jobs in a work program.
Social Welfare and Development Secretary Corazon Soliman promised to provide tents for the patients who had to vacate the city hospital which suffered cracks.
