Open Corona accounts -- Senate

THE Senate granted the request of the prosecution to order BPI and PS Bank to open all local and dollar accounts of Supreme Court Chief Justice Renato Corona.

However, the impeachment court imposed certain limitations, said Senate Majority Floor Leader Vicente “Tito” Sotto when he read the court resolutions shortly after their caucus late afternoon yesterday.

The defense counsel former Supreme Court Associate Justice Serafin Cuevas tried to file a motion for reconsideration but was blocked by the impeachment court

In a resolution signed by 21 senators, the impeachment court had ordered the issuance of subpoena ad testificandum and subpoena duces tecum to require the president, manager and other authorized officers of PS Bank to testify and bring the original and certified true copies of specimen signature cards of the bank account which won P1 million in the PS Bank monthly million raffle promo; monthly bank statements and other bank accounts, including the time deposits, money market placement, peso/ dollar accounts and the like in the name of Corona and his wife Cristina.

The Senate impeachment court also ordered the issuance of subpoena ad testificandum and subpoena duces tecum to require the manager of the BPI Ayala Branch to testify and bring documents in relation to Bank Account No. 1443-8030-61 purportedly owned by Corona and his wife.

Earlier, BIR Commissioner Kim Henares confirmed that Corona has a lot of discrepancies in his Statement of Assets and Liabilities Networth (SALN).

She said there were nine properties that Corona did not declare in his SALN.

In 2003, Corona’s SALN also did not show the property in Marikina. The La Vista property in Quezon City was declared at P3 million when it should be at P11 million,” said Henares.

Coronas networth was P7 million instead of P14 million, she added.

In 2004, Henares said the Marikina property and his The Column condominium unit in Ayala, Makati City was not declared. The networth was reported around P7 million which should be P21.6 million.

The Fort Bonifacio property was also undeclared in 2005 and 2006 wherein the reported networth was P8.3 million instead P31.24 million.

In 2007, Corona’s networth was P11 million instead of P24 million. On Coronas SALN in 2008, he reported only P12 million instead of P25 million; his 2009 networth was P14.5 million which should be P52 million because of the acquired property in Bellagio Towers in The Fort.

The 2010 Corona networth went down because of the La Vista sale of P18 million.
