Junk Luisita plea

THE militant Kilusang Magbubukid ng Pilipinas yesterday asked the Supreme Court to junk the motion for reconsideration filed by the Cojuangco-Aquinos seeking to stop the distribution of Hacienda Luisita of the more than 6,000-hectare agricultural estate.

“The SC should immediately junk this latest legal obstacle mounted by the President’s family against the distribution of Hacienda Luisita,”  KMP deputy secretary general Willy Marbella said in a petition.

“In light of the obvious political maneuvers and attempts by Aquino to take over the SC in order to reverse its ruling on Hacienda Luisita and maintain his family’s control over the lands, we call on the SC justices to stand by their decision to distribute the hacienda and make it final and executory,” he added.

He said the 15-man Tribunal should not be cowed by the power and “bullying” by President Aquijno III and his men.

“The High Court justices should not be cowed and resist Aquino’s family’s political bullying,” Marbella added.

The peasant leader said that “aside from maintaining his family’s control over Hacienda Luisita, it is very crucial for Aquino to control the Supreme Court to push further his anti-peasant and anti-people policies.”

In their decision last November, the High Court set aside the option given to farmers to remain stockholders of Hacienda Luisita Inc. (HLI).

The high court justices unanimously agreed that the contested land should be distributed by HLI to the original 6,296 farmer beneficiaries pursuant to the order of the Presidential Agrarian Reform Council (PARC) in 2005.

The High Court also ordered HLI to pay the original beneficiaries some P1.33 billion earned from selling a 500-hectare portion of the disputed estate.
