STRESSING that the impeachment trial of Supreme Court Chief Justice Renato Corona is not a “beauty contest,” Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile yesterday said the senator-judges are expected to resolve the case based on evidence and not due to public opinion.
He stressed this point as he observed that the prosecution and defense panels as well as some concerned groups were trying to “appeal to the emotion of the public” by hiring supposed legal consultants who regularly “analyze” the proceedings in radio and television interviews.
“Hindi naman beauty contest ito. Hindi kami kikiling kahit kanino. Kung ikaw ay referree, ikaw ay patas. Nasa gitna. Kung beauty contest ito, may preference,” Enrile said in a radio interview.
“Nakakalungkot. Factual dapat,” he said.
Asked what he would advice the public, Enrile said: “Dapat pag-aralan nila ang simbolo ng katarungan.
