FISHERFOLKS’ group Pambansang Lakas ng Kilusang Mamamalakaya ng Pilipinas yesterday questioned the motives of President Benigno Aquino III in discussing the impeachment case of Chief Justice Renato Corona with visiting US senators.
Pamalakaya national chair Fernando Hicap was reacting to reports that Aquino briefed US Senators John Sidney McCain III (Republican, Arizona) and Joseph Lieberman, Esq. (Republican, Connecticut) about the on-going impeachment trial.
“Why discuss the ongoing impeachment of Corona with US senators? What is the purpose of Mr. Aquino? Does the Washington government have something to do with the impeachment case? So, what is this entire political buzz Mr. President?” Hicap asked.
“The impeachment trial against Corona is a serious internal political affair and must be resolved by the Philippines alone,” he added.
He also reminded Aquino that the impeachment case being tried by the Senate, for three days now, must be resolved with genuine “political will” and “honest-to-goodness aspiration” so the administration could make former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo accountable for her crimes, allegedly committed during her nine-year rule.
Arroyo is facing numerous cases, including electoral fraud, which she allegedly committed during the 2007 national and local polls.
