SAN Jose City, Nueva Ecija -- Even your lowly bonsai plants displayed outside the house are not safe from robbers nowadays.
This after two alleged drunk men were nabbed after stealing a bonsai plant outside the house owned by a physician here last Saturday.
City police commander Supt. Reynaldo SG. dela Cruz identified those arrested as Rolando Pascua, 29, and Sherwin Bala, 16, both of Bgy. Culaylay, this city.
They were identified as those who allegedly stole the said plant at the house of spouses Dr. Joel and Jonalyn Ruiz after police got hold of the footages of a closed circuit television (CCTV) camera installed in the victims’ premises on Sanchez Extension, Curamen Subd., Bgy. Sibut, this city.
Investigation showed that the suspects had a prior drinking spree and were riding a Kawasaki Bajaj tricycle when they passed by the victims’ house on their way home and saw the bonsai plant.
The CCTV footage showed the suspects stopped, then grabbed the bonsai plant and put it inside the tricycle.
SPO1 Apolinario P. Tolentino, officer-on-case, said they got the lead in the case when they were able to identify the tricycle used by the two suspects through its body number.
He said they were able to trace the vehicle’s body number and locate its owner, identified as Romulo Gines, 36, of Zone 2, Bgy. San Agustin, this city.
Tolentino said Gines then fingered his brother-in-law Pascua, who borrowed from him said tricycle that night the bonsai plant was stolen.
After another follow-up investigation, Tolentino said the two suspects were nabbed and owned up to the crime.
Tolentino said the suspects admitted getting too drunk that they got attracted by the plant and stole it.
“Takang-taka pa nga ’yung nanay ni Pascua kung bakit may uwing bonsai siya sa bahay,” said Tolentino.
During a face-off with the victims, he said the suspects sought forgiveness which the spouses granted.
Tolentino also said the Ruizes manifested they would not file a criminal complaint against the two anymore.
