DEFENDING champion College of Saint Benilde and San Beda grabbed the share of the early lead after besting their respective foes yesterday in the NCAA women’s volleyball tournament at the Filoil Flying V Centre.
Jeanette Panaga took over in the deciding frame as the Lady Blazers fended off Letran, 25-27, 23-25, 25-22, 25-7, 15-12, while rookie Cesca Racraquin sizzled as the Lady Red Spikers turned back University of Perpetual Help System, 25-19, 20-25, 25-21, 25-21.
St. Benilde and San Beda improved to 2-0 in the young season.
Panaga, last season’s Finals MVP, had five service aces and four blocks to finish with 19 points while Ranya Musa also had 19 points, including four blocks for the Lady Blazers.
Racraquin came through with 14 points, including two service aces, Nieza Viray added 11 points while libero Daryl Racraquin collected 17 digs for San Beda, which is enjoying its finest start in three years.
Coleen Bravo scored 10 points, including two blocks, for the Lady Altas, who stumbled to their second consecutive setback.
It was a sorry loss for the Lady Knights, who won two of the first three sets before losing steam in the last two sets.
Mikaela Lopez paced Letran with 18 points, including five service aces and two blocks, while Faith Torres chipped in 12 markers and playmaker Charm Simborio tossed in 38 excellent sets.
In the men’s division, Johnvic de Guzman and Isaah Oneal Arda teamed up for 26 points as St. Benilde defeated Letran, 25-19, 25-13, 26-24, to tie its victims at 1-1.
Letran also emerged victorious in juniors play, topping CSB-La Salle Greenhills, 25-16, 25-19, 25-19, to even its record at 1-1.
