SAYING it will greatly boost their ongoing crackdown against drugs and terror, Philippine National Police chief Director General Ronald ‘Bato’ M. dela Rosa yesterday expressed full support to the plan of President Duterte to suspend the writ of habeas corpus if lawlessness in Mindanao will continue.
“Malaki po ang tulong nito. Number 1, it will make our job easier. Number 2, it will provide enough deterrence to drug violators,” the PNP chief told newsmen at Camp Crame amid Duterte’s pronouncement that he could declare the suspension due to lawlessness being felt in Mindanao.
Gen. de la Rosa particularly cited the presence of the Maute Group in Mindanao which has been blamed for the recent deadly Davao City bombings. He said that during his Malaysian trip, he met with defense officials who discussed with him their plans to thwart atrocities of lawless groups such as the Abu Sayyaf whose members are involved in the kidnapping of foreign targets in Malaysian and Philippine territorial waters.
However, Gen. de la Rosa fully assured the public that police will not abuse such power.
The PNP chief said that all safeguards are in place to prevent police abuses and maintained that they are going after rogues in the uniformed service regardless of their rank and stature.
