Radioman ambushed

VILLASIS, Pangasinan -- A radio commentator and newspaper columnist here survived an ambush yesterday morning.

The victim was identified as Virgilio Sarmiento Maganes, 59, of Bgy. San Blas, this town, of DWPR radio station based in Dagupan City, . 

Initial investigation conducted by the Villasis Police Station disclosed that the incident occurred at 5:40 a.m. on Villasis-Asingan Road in Poblacion, Zone 1, this town.
Police said Maganes was on board a tricycle when he was shot several times by unidentified motorcycle-riding suspects, who quickly sped away after the gun attack.
He was taken to Dr. Chan Hospital here for treatment of graze wounds in the right side of the body and is now in stable condition.
Meawnhile, Senator Grace Poe yesterday urged the Philippine National Police (PNP) to immediately investigate the shooting of Maganes.
Poe appealed for a thorough probe on the incident as she also asked to put a stop to violence against journalists.
“The attacks against them and their safety are curtailment of their freedom of expression. We appeal to the Philippine National Police to conduct an immediate and thorough investigation on the shooting of Virgilio Maganes, a newspaper columnist and radio commentator based in Pangasinan,” she said in a statement.
She added that med-iamen are partners in upholding the truth.
“Let us not silence them,” she said.
