HIGHLY-RESPECTED retired Police General Leonardo A. Espina yesterday denied any connection to the illegal drug activities of slain Albuera, Leyte Mayor Rolando Espinosa Sr. saying his name was merely used by his brother-in-law in dealing with the late official. The retired top cop also said he doesn’t personally know the mayor.

As what many officials close to the former Philippine National Police officer-in-charge have been saying, it now appears that Espina’s brother-in-law Victor Espina Jr. used the latter’s position in dealing with the elder Espinosa, even in making gun purchases in behalf of the mayor.
“Nadinig ko na dati na na-include daw ako sa affidavit ni Mayor Espinosa. Unfortunately, my brother-in-law, si Victor Espina Jr., somehow implicated siya as supplier ng armas ni Espinosa and he used my name. May pinalipat pa umanong isang opisyal ang bayaw ko, gamit ang pangalan ko,” the member of Philippine Military Academy Class 1981 said.
Already retired since July last year and leaving a simple life, the respected former top cop said he has discovered lately that his brother-in-law used his name in dealing with Espinosa. Reports linking Victor Espina has jolted the Espina family which has banded together to protect the general’s good name.
Espina said he had also discovered that there was one instance when his brother-in-law managed to have one police official transferred from his post by name-dropping the general’s name.  Apparently, Victor resorted to ‘name-dropping’ Gen. Espina’s name to get favors from some individuals and at the same time earn some money.
Victor is the brother of Espina’s wife who has maintained that the rule of law must prevail and that the guilty ones should be punished, even if one of them is her brother. The retired general’s wife also carries the surname Espina. Victor Espina used to reside in Ormoc City which is near Albuera municipality.
The late Espinosa is the father of Kerwin, the suspected Eastern Visayas drug lord who is expected to be repatriated to the country by Abu Dhabi authorities as soon as his investigation for violating the immigration laws of the oil-rich city is over.
