DESPITE tight security measures being implemented at the New Bilibid Prison (NBP), several contraband were seized in yesterday’s “Oplan Galugad” conducted by the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) and Philippine National Police Special Action Force (SAF).
Rolando Asuncion, BuCor director, said the operation was conducted at 10 a.m. wherein operatives raided inmates’ cells at the medium security compound at the NBP.
Confiscated during the raid were 18 cellular phones and various bladed weapons that included several kitchen and improvised knives, ice picks and playing cards.
Asuncion said the raid lasted more than two hours as they practically scourged every nit and corner of the building looking for contraband.
After the raid, Asuncion also ordered the transfer of 13 inmates from the medium security compound to building 14 of the maximum security compound after they were implicated in the illegal drug trade.
Asuncion said the names of the said inmates were given by Nonilo “Nonnie” Arille, a former Manila policeman serving sentence at the NBP, before the House justice committee hearing the issue on illegal drug trade inside the NBP.
He added that inmates Jaybee Sebastian, Peter Co at Vicente Sy, who testified in last Monday’s committee hearing, remain confined at the Medical Center of Muntinlupa (MCM) and are recuperating from wounds they sustained after they were stabbed in a riot sparked by an altercation among inmates.
