SENATOR Leila de Lima yesterday warned her detractors, particularly those people who are fabricating stories against her.
“May araw din po kayo,” said De Lima in her privilege speech.
De Lima opened her speech by congratulating Senator Alan Peter Cayetano for his “triumphant victory” on Monday, referring to her ouster as chairman of the Senate committee on justice and human rights.
“Congratulations to Senator Alan for his triumphant victory yesterday, and for making me realize that a committee chairmanship is not the end of everything for me as a senator. No committee chairmanship is worth it, if it means sacrificing my principles and surrendering the causes that I pledged my life to fight for,” she said.
De Lima said many of her friends and colleagues have told her that if she did not call out President Rodrigo Duterte on the murderous consequences of his war on drugs and decided to be as “meek as a sheep,” she would not be in trouble and still have the committee chairmanship.
She also quoted the Bible that states, “What does it profit a man to gain the whole world, and yet lose his soul?”
Mr. President, it would take more than a committee chairmanship, a house inquiry intended to pillory and crucify me, an ethics committee complaint based on hearsay, a baseless election protest, everyday tirades from the Secretary of Justice and the Solicitor General, and vicious personal attacks from the President, to take me down,” she added.
At the same time, De Lima said that she is still waiting for the “kitchen sink” to be thrown at her.
