“I WILL plead for mercy,” President Rodrigo Duterte promised when he talked about Mary Jane Veloso, the Filipina drug mule on death row in Indonesia, in his departure talk with reporters yesterday.
Duterte however said he is willing to accept President Joko Widodo’s decision on the final fate of the condemned Filipina.
In his press briefing yesterday afternoon in Davao City before flying to Laos for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit, Duterte said he would meet with Indonesian President Widodo when he visits Indonesia after the summit.
“I may just have to ask Widodo in the most respectful and very very courteous way. And if my pleadings will fall on deaf ears, I am ready to accept it,” Duterte said, stressing that he does not doubt the judicial system of Indonesia.
Reports said that Duterte will attempt to secure a meeting with Veloso during his visit to Indonesia next week. “Given the opportunity, I think he will,” presidential spokesman Ernesto Abella told Palace reporters when asked about the President’s possible meeting with Veloso.
The President is scheduled to visit Indonesia on September 8 and 9, shortly after attending the ASEAN confab.
Earlier, Veloso personally appealed to President Duterte to help her gain her freedom.
In an emotional audio recording sent by Migrante International,Veloso appealed to President Duterte for help in “getting justice.”
“Matagal na akong nagtitiis dito sa Indonesia, nagtitiis sa lahat ng ito gayong wala naman akong kasalanan,” she said. “Kayo lang po ang pag-asa ko.Mag 7 years na po ako dito sa Indonesia, hindi ko pa rin po nakakamtan yung katarungan na hinihintay ko. Yun lang po ang hinihiling ko sa inyo - na bigyan niyo ako ng katarungan,” she said.
