Bombers, Knights prevail

NEEDING one big win to wheel back to the Final Four contention, Jose Rizal University subdued College of Saint Benilde, 71-63, yesterday in the NCAA seniors basketball tournament at the Filoil Flying V Centre.

Cameroonian Abdel Poutouochi bulldozed his way to 14 points, seven rebounds and two blocks while Paolo Pontejos and Teytey Teodoro fired 14 and 11 points, respectively, to help the Bombers snare their eighth win against six defeats.

Rebounding from a tough 60-63 loss to Emilio Aguinaldo College last Tuesday, Jose Rizal moved within half-a-game of idle Mapua (8-5) in the race for the last semifinals berth.

“We just want to win our last games and see what happens,” said Bombers mentor Vergel Meneses.

Later, Rey Nambatac and JP Calvo tossed in 16 points apiece as defending champion Letran turned back San Sebastian, 73-61, for its second straight victory after a five-game losing skid, and the seventh overall in 14 matches.

The victory also fanned the Knights’ Final Four hopes as they only now trail the Cardinals by one-and-a-half game, while halting the Stags’ four-game winning run.

“It’s still a long way to go. We really need to perform well,” said Letran coach Jeff Napa.

Michael Calisaan had 24 points and nine boards for San Sebastian, which fell at 5-10 in ninth spot.
