2 guns-for-hire dies in QC checkpoint clash

POLICE gunned down two alleged members of a gun-for-hire group when they chanced upon them at a police checkpoint in Quezon City on Wednesday night.

A report from the Quezon City Police District-Criminal Investigation and Detection Unit said  members of Anti-Carnapping Unit of QCPD, led by Insp. Manuel dela Cruz, conducted Oplan Sita on NIA Road, Bgy. Pinyahan, at around 11:40 p.m. after receiving information about the presence of gun-for-hire suspects in the area.
   
The informant told police that the suspects on board a black Rusi motorcycle with no license plate  were frequently seen in a squatter’s area in Bgy. Central.
   
Police chanced upon the suspects in the area.
   
They reportedly tried to flag them down but was ignored.
   
A brief chase ensued until the suspects fired shots, prompting the policemen to retaliate, killing the two suspects. No policeman was hurt during the gunfight.
   
One of the fatalities was identified as Glenn Pergrino Elbio, 31, of 4262 Zone 4, Sto. Domingo, Calabanga, Camarines Sur. His cohort’s identity is still being determined by police.
   
Intelligence reports said Elbio was the alleged leader of a gun-for-hire syndicate operating in Regions 3, 5 and Metro Manila and has a standing warrant for murder issued by 3rd Judicial Regional Branch 22, Malolos, Bulacan, with no bail recommended.
